Milestones render as diamonds, baselines overlay below the live schedule, the critical path glows in its own colour, and a vertical today line keeps everyone honest. Impact analysis that names names
The Dependency Impact Matrix lists every task with its full transitive downstream chain. Cascade risk is scored automatically: CRITICAL for three or more downstream tasks, MODERATE for one or two, ISOLATED for none, each with a recommended action. Apply a delay and every affected row highlights instantly, with a propagated delay column showing exactly how many days each downstream task moves and which root cause pushed it.
Simulate delays without touching live data
The Delay Simulator is a safe sandbox. Enter hypothetical delays against one task or twenty, and the Gantt, Impact Matrix, and critical path update in real time behind a clear simulation banner. Compound scenarios follow real scheduling logic: when multiple upstream delays converge on one task, it inherits the maximum, not the sum. Reset with one click, or commit only when the decision is made.
Critical path, always current
Depentra recalculates the critical path automatically whenever any date, duration, dependency, or delay changes, accounting for all four dependency types plus lead and lag. Every task shows total float, near-critical tasks within your configurable threshold are highlighted, and a summary panel tracks the roadmap end date, critical task count, and longest chain.
Resources, effort, and working calendars
Assign named resources to tasks with allocation percentages. The Resource Workload view flags over-allocation in configurable colours, warns at assignment time when someone is already at capacity, and suggests levelling adjustments. Working calendars with public holidays keep durations honest in working days, and time logs roll actual effort up through the hierarchy.
Budget with real earned value
Track planned and actual cost per task with automatic rollups, budget caps, contingency reserves, and an approval queue for large changes. CPI, EAC, ETC, and VAC are computed continuously and badged On Budget, At Risk, or Over Budget. Burn-down charts, cost-by-resource breakdowns, and a dedicated budget audit log complete the picture.
